Good Shepherd Sunday
This Sunday, the Fourth Sunday of Easter, we celebrate Good Shepherd Sunday—a day that invites us to reflect on Christ as the one who knows, guides, and lays down his life for his flock. It is also the World Day of Prayer for Vocations, a moment for the whole Church to pause and pray that many will hear and respond generously to God’s call.
In the Gospel, Jesus says, “My sheep hear my voice; I know them, and they follow me.” These words remind us that vocation begins not with our own plans, but with attentive listening. God continues to call—quietly, persistently—into the hearts of people today. The question is not whether God is calling, but whether we are making space to listen.
Good Shepherd Sunday is not only about those already called—it is about all of us. Each of us has a vocation, a unique way of living out our baptismal call to love and serve. For some, that will mean priesthood or religious life; for others, marriage, family life, or dedicated service within the Church and society. Every vocation matters. Every “yes” builds up the Body of Christ.
We encourage families to speak openly and positively about vocations. A simple word of encouragement can plant a seed that God may grow in time. We also invite you to pray—personally and as a community—for an increase in vocations, especially to the priesthood and consecrated life in our diocese.
If you feel even the slightest stirring in your heart, do not ignore it. Take time in prayer. Speak with someone you trust. God’s call is never a burden; it is an invitation to deeper joy, purpose, and love.
May Christ the Good Shepherd guide us all, and may the Holy Spirit awaken generous hearts within the our Diocese of Ossory to respond to the needs of the Church today.
“The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want.” (Psalm 23)
